The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero. He was apprehended on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while on his way to the United Kingdom for an official engagement.

Campus Business (September 9) : Ajaero was scheduled to attend the Trade Union Congress (TUC) conference in London, which commences today.

Confirming the incident, the NLC took to its official X handle (formerly Twitter) to condemn the arrest, stating that “the assault on Nigerian workers continues.”

In its post, the NLC wrote:
“President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, was arrested and abducted by men of the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, this morning on his way to attend an official engagement of TUC United Kingdom, and he is now detained at the office of the NSA.”

The NLC further added:
“This intimidation and assault must stop!!!”

This development follows Ajaero’s previous invitation by the Nigeria Police Force over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, and treasonable felony. These charges are reportedly linked to his alleged connection with a Briton, Andrew Wynne, who is accused of financing the recent #EndBadGovernance or #Hunger protests in Nigeria.

Ajaero had initially appeared before the police on August 29 and was subsequently summoned to appear again on September 5, 2024, alongside the NLC General Secretary, to address charges of criminal intimidation and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
